At Star, we are committed to developing the next generation of teachers, managers and leaders in our own schools and throughout the school system.  We want to ensure that new teachers are supported to get the very best start possible in their careers and have the tools in place to succeed and develop within the profession.

The Star Institute Early Career Development Programme is a structured programme of learning and activities to help newly and recently qualified teachers to build the strong foundations they need to develop as outstanding practitioners.  The programme draws explicitly on the research that has informed the new Ofsted framework and training for Ofsted Inspectors.  It also has strong links with the Early Career Framework drawing it together with the local contexts to ensure the programme meets the needs of our teachers and, in turn, our children.  Where relevant the content is tailored to different phases.

For MATs, Teaching School Alliances or other school groups who have at least 20 participants there is the option to deliver the designed curriculum to your own staff.


Any teacher within their first three years of teaching.


The programme has a number of components:

  • A programme of eight learning sessions bringing together the Early Career Framework with the local context.
  • A diagnostic to support schools to ensure ECTs are accessing the training they need for their development.
  • ‘Afternoon tea’ networking events with both a learning and social purpose to bring experts and teacher ambassadors to speak to ECTs, enabling them to form strong peer networks and build healthy professional habits.
  • A conference for mentors to develop an understanding of the Early Career Framework and to strengthen mentoring skills.

The commitment for an ECT engaging with the programme will be six training sessions, from a choice of eight, lasting 90 minutes and four networking events.


For 2019-2020 the programme is fully funded by Blackpool Opportunity Area for teachers within the first three years’ of their career in Blackpool schools.  For further information click here or apply.

We are offering our partners, Multi Academy Trusts (MATs), Teaching School Alliances, and other school groupings the opportunity to deliver the Star Early Career Development Programme for those in their first three years of teaching.  The package includes:

  • Facilitator training for up to two lead facilitators covering all eight pedagogical sessions.
  • Detailed learning and session materials including full facilitator notes.
  • The opportunity for mentors to attend our annual Mentor Conference.
  • The flexibility to tailor the learning to your own participants under an 80/20 rule.
