Outstanding teaching delivers outstanding outcomes. At Star Institute, we understand what outstanding teaching looks like and how to help teachers get there whatever their starting point. Our network of schools enjoy Ofsted Outstanding recognition, excellent results and some of the highest attendance rates in the country.

Harnessing this experience, we have developed the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship; a school centred Initial Teacher Training programme that offers:

  • Opportunities for outstanding training whilst remaining in paid employment
  • Personalisation and progression
  • Immersion in good and outstanding practice
  • World class people
  • Strong subject knowledge
  • A focus on teaching character
  • Career pathway planning

You will be afforded a unique opportunity to remain in employment whilst working towards QTS on the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship route. The Institute works in partnership with a diverse network of schools and is committed to bringing together apprentices and schools for their mutual benefit. Schools benefit from the programme because it gives them access to highly sought-after Star Institute training.

We do not believe in a ‘One Size Fits All’ approach to learning. With this in mind, we focus on individuals, designing a pathway personalised to specific needs and circumstances. An initial self-audit, linked to the Teachers’ Standards, will inform a tailored programme designed to develop skills and abilities. Apprentices will be supported to systematically develop a pedagogical toolkit based on a deep knowledge and understanding of how children learn. Highly skilled professional mentors, in school and from the central team, will offer support throughout the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship, helping apprentices to understand the theory of teaching and learning. Progress will be assessed in a variety of ways, all of which will support your development as a reflective practitioner and outstanding teacher.

Our high quality training allows you to observe the very best of professional practice. We will also equip apprentices with the skills to work in an array of schools, including those in challenging circumstances. Alongside your core school, you will gain experience in a Special School or Pupil Referral Unit as part of the college sessions, which will take place on a Friday. The rich variety of settings provide you with the greatest opportunity to make an impact on the life chances of young people.

From the moment you join us, you will benefit from the skills and experiences of a team of outstanding classroom practitioners who are highly acclaimed national and international authorities in their subjects and specialist areas. Our team will work alongside you at each stage of your apprenticeship journey. Centre based personal tutors are assigned to accelerate your professional development throughout the programme and to provide one-to-one pastoral support. Recognised facilitators add to the richness of your experience and help stimulate academic discussion and debate. Wherever you are, at school or centre, you will be guided by truly world class people.

Our innovative postgraduate programme centres on the essential dynamics of pedagogy, progress and pupils. Our programme is informed by practitioner-led research in Star schools supported by the Institute’s research programmes. This ensures your apprenticeship is rooted in the latest thinking and remains at the cutting edge of professional practice. Each taught element is designed, and delivered, by experts in their field. The Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is knowledge based, thorough, stimulating and challenging, combining the theory of teaching and learning with the methodology for practical application in the classroom.

An outstanding education is a rounded education. Teachers play a vital role in modelling appropriate conduct, building character, developing resilience and instilling British values. The Star Institute Teaching Apprenticeship will equip you with the skills to develop and nurture character traits, attributes and behaviours that underpin pupils’ success in school, work and modern Britain. Our focus on character development is supplemented by opportunities for citizenship and service learning projects. This holistic emphasis on academic excellence and character development will cement your understanding of a whole child-centred approach to education and place you at the heart of a school’s community.

Throughout the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship you will work systematically towards the achievement of the Teachers’ Standards. Our ambition for apprentices is to complete the programme as a good or outstanding professional with Qualified Teacher Status. You have the opportunity to complete a PGCert and achieve credit points towards a Masters’ Degree. At Star Institute, we do not believe that your development ends with the award of QTS, though. In choosing to complete a Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship with us, you also begin a journey of continuous professional development. From programmes for newly and recently qualified teachers to leadership learning with the national professional qualifications for leaders, our spectrum of programmes provide a powerful continuum of progression.
