The National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) is run by the School-Led Development Trust, which was founded by four of England’s leading school trusts: Star Academies, The Harris Federation, Oasis Community Learning and Outwood Grange Academies Trust. Together, we are committed to transforming teacher development and the impact it has on school improvement.

Each of the four founding trusts anchors an NIoT region and each CEO sits on the NIoT board of directors. The National Institute of Teaching’s central team is headquartered in Blackburn on the Star Academies Central Office site, where Star Institute is also located.

The NIoT is Star Teaching Schools Hubs’ (TSH) Lead Provider for the full Golden Thread, from Initial Teacher Training (ITT) to the Early Career Framework (ECF) and the full suite of National Professional Qualifications (NPQs). This provides a unique coherence enabling schools working with Star to maximise the impact of this DfE-funded professional development pathway for their staff. The potential of this is even greater when combined with the Star TSH Appropriate Body Service.

The NIoT’s vision is of a school system that nurtures the talents of teachers and leaders at all stages of their careers, so they can provide children with the world-class education they deserve.

The National Institute of Teaching boosts the quality of teaching and school leadership by carrying out research, applying the insights to its professional development programmes, and sharing findings with the sector.

The NIoT’s research agenda is determined by teachers and leaders. The use what they learn to constantly improve the programmes they offer – from teacher training through to NPQs – so that they can act as an exemplar.

This evidence is available to all schools, not just those working with the NIoT so that it will benefit the wider system and ultimately, all pupils. To find out more about current NIoT research projects, visit their website.

The NIoT’s programmes are designed by teachers and leaders who understand the joys and pressures of school life. They work in collaboration with schools across the country, ensuring that their findings benefit all schools, teachers and leaders.
