NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TEACHING

The National Institute of Teaching (NIoT) is run by the School-Led Development Trust, a charity, founded by four of the country’s leading school trusts (Star Academies, Harris Federation, Outwood Grange Academies Trust and Oasis Community Learning) and supported by the Department for Education.

The National Institute of Teaching is boosting the quality of teacher and leader development nationally by generating and interpreting research, applying the insights to the design and delivery of high-quality teacher and school leader development programmes, and sharing it with the sector.

The NIoT is building a school-led movement, strengthening relationships and collaboration across the system.

All of Star’s teacher training courses are now offered through The National Institute of Teaching. More information can be found here.

The NIoT offers three routes into primary and secondary teaching:

  1. Initial Teacher Training (ITT)
  2. Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship (PGTA)
  3. Assessment Only

Trainees can specialise in Primary, Primary with mathematics or a specific subject at Secondary level. Details of all subjects can be found on the National Institute of Teaching website.

Initial Teacher Training (ITT)

The NIoT’s Initial Teacher Training is a twelve-month fully immersive school-centred programme – aspiring teachers will be in the classroom from the very start. Trainees are mentored and have central training once a week. The programme leads to QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) and 60 Master’s Degree level credits. The NIoT offers this route as a full-time and part-time course.

Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship (PGTA)

The NIoT’s Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is a fourteen-month programme that runs from July to August and leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) whilst remaining in paid employment in school. The NIoT’s blended learning approach combines in-school experience, centre-based training and off the job training.

Assessment Only

The NIoT’s Assessment Only route provides a fast-track route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for unqualified teachers who are already employed in a school environment and have two or more years’ experience. The length of your training will vary from six weeks to three months depending on your level of experience.

The NIoT is dedicated to training teachers and school leaders at every stage of their careers – from trainee through to executive leader.
